ABSTRACT

Nowadays, the social dimension of product sustainability is increasingly in demand, however, industrial designers struggle to pursue it much more than the environmental or economic one due to their unfamiliarity in correlating design choices with social impacts. In addition, this gap is not filled even by the supporting methods that have been conceived to only support specific areas of application. To fill this gap, this study proposed a method to support social failure mode and effect analysis (SFMEA), though the automatic failure determination, based on the use of a chatbot (i.e., an artificial intelligence (AI)-based chat). The method consists of 84 specific questions to ask the chatbot, resulting from the combination of known failures and social failures, elements from design theories, and syntactic structures. The starting hypothesis to be verified is that a GPT Chat (i.e., a common AI-based chat), properly queried, can provide all the main elements for the automatic compilation of a SFMEA (i.e., to determine the social failures). To do this, the proposed questions were tested in three case studies to extract all the failures and elements that express predefined SFMEA scenarios: a coffee cup provoking gender discrimination, a COVID mask denying a human right, and a thermometer undermining the cultural heritage of a community. The obtained results confirmed the starting hypothesis by showing the strengths and weaknesses of the obtained answers in relation to the following factors: the number and type of inputs (i.e., the failures) provided in the questions;the lexicon used in the question, favoring the use of technical terms derived from design theories and social sustainability taxonomies;the type of the problem. Through this test, the proposed method proved its ability to support the social sustainable design of different products and in different ways. However, a dutiful recommendation instead concerns the tool (i.e., the chatbot) due to its filters that limit some answers in which the designer tries to voluntarily hypothesize failures to explore their social consequences.

ABSTRACT

To develop a multiplex fluorescent quantitative RT-PCR for the detection of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) and swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), in this study, specific primers/probes were designed based on the conserved regions of M, M and N gene sequences of PEDV, PDCoV and SADS-CoV, respectively. After optimization of the reaction conditions, a multiplex fluorescent quantitative RT-PCR for PEDV, PDCoV and SADS-CoV was established. The results of specificity assay showed that the method was positive for detection of PEDV, PDCoV and SADS-CoV, and negative for detection of porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus, porcine rotavirus, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, porcine pseudorabies virus, porcine circovirus type 2, porcine parvovirus, classical swine fever virus and foot-and-mouth disease virus. The results of sensitivity assay showed that the detection limit of this method for PEDV, PDCoV, and SADS-CoV plasmids standard was 1.0x101 copies/L, and had a good linear relationship with their Ct values in the range of 101 copies/L to 106 copies/L. The results of repeatability assay showed that the coefficients of variation (CVs) of intra- and inter-assay reproducibility ranged from 0.33% to 2.53%, indicating good repeatability and stability. To evaluate the effects of the developed method, 100 clinical samples collected from different parts of Henan province were used for detection of these three viruses and compared with those of single RT-PCR and standard methods. The results of multiplex fluorescent quantitative RT-PCR showed that the positive rates of PEDV, PDCoV and SADS-CoV were 38% (38/100), 14% (14/100) and 5% (5/100), respectively. There was no mixed infection. The coincidence rate with the standard detection methods of PEDV and PDCoV was 100%, and the sensitivity was higher than that of single RT-PCR. In this study, a specific, sensitive and rapid multiplex fluorescent quantitative RTPCR method was established for the first time, which could be used for the differential detection of PEDV, PDCoV and SADS-CoV, and laid a foundation for the differential diagnosis and control of porcine diarrheal diseases.

ABSTRACT

Digital nomadism gradually expanded during the 2010s. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, remote work (a prerequisite to digital nomadism), suddenly became mainstream. In this new context the term digital nomadism is increasingly used in ways that are broader or different to its original conception. This paper reviews scientific literature and draws on the author's ethnographic fieldwork to create an updated classification of contemporary digital nomadism that acknowledges the broad spectrum of individuals, groups, communities, identities, and imaginaries labelled with the term digital nomad. The paper updates the definition of digital nomadism and provides a new taxonomy which subdivides the digital nomad model into five distinct types: freelance digital nomads;digital nomad business owners;salaried digital nomads;experimental digital nomads and armchair digital nomads. It also proposes that six key variable themes should be applied to these classifications. These are: autonomy over mobility;homebase practices;domestic vs. transnational travel;legal legitimacy;work-life balance and coworking space usage. The taxonomy and the variable themes are proposed as a roadmap for future research and as a tool so researchers and policymakers can more accurately evaluate real-world examples of digital nomad context, motivation, practice, and impact.

ABSTRACT

Macrolobium paulobocae is presented as a new species of the legume subfamily Detarioideae. It is restricted to seasonally flooded igapó forests in the Central Amazon. We provide a description, illustration, photographs, and a distribution map of the new species, as well as a table of comparative morphology with similar, likely phylogenetically related species. The epithet is in honor of Paulo Apóstolo Costa Lima Assunção, or Paulo Boca, a great Amazonian botanist, victim of COVID-19 in January 2021.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the metaphorical speech acts used by Australian commentators on Facebook during COVID-19. The sample contained 50 Facebook comments that were analyzed qualitatively. The study adopted Searle taxonomy of speech acts, namely, directive, assertive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. This helped in identifying the different functions of the metaphorical speech acts. Moreover, Austin taxonomy of speech act forms, namely, locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary, was adopted. The findings revealed that the most common types of metaphors that were used by the Australian commentators were war and conflict metaphors, followed by psychological status metaphors and irony metaphors. The study found that war and conflict metaphors were the most commonly used forms of speech by the commentators. This is in alignment with the literature that also highlights how the advent of a crisis, such as COVID-19, results in excessive use of war and militarized metaphors. The study found that the most common speech act was directive, while expressive was the least common form used by Australian commentators during the COVID19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

This study focuses on developing specific vocabulary learning strategies to assist the receptive knowledge of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). It aims to provide a practical framework for teaching technical vocabulary. The study introduced the Multimedia Strategic Vocabulary Learning (MSVL) model and investigated its effects on teaching technical vocabulary to pre-engineering students in online courses during the early wave of COVID-19. A total of 88 Saudi undergraduate students randomly assigned to control and experimental groups were treated with an intact pre-engineering ESP course for ten weeks. Vocabulary learning strategies from Schmitt's (1997) vocabulary taxonomy were adopted and incorporated into two stages of the vocabulary acquisition process. The experimental group was treated with the MSVL model through multimedia and explicit vocabulary learning instructions in online classes using Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) to assist them with specialized vocabulary acquisition. The dependent measure in this study was the participants' receptive knowledge of technical vocabulary, which was assessed using the pre-test, post-test, and delayed post-test. The findings indicated that using the MSVL model significantly improved the experimental group's receptive knowledge of technical vocabulary. This study's guidelines help educators create multimedia resources for ESP learners, preparing them for their professions. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to compare critical thinking in online and face-to-face formats in an organic chemistry course and report the cognitive dimensions of revised Bloom's taxonomy. The sample used in this research was a 31 students group of grade 12 students at the Demonstration School of Ramkhamhaeng University, Thailand, in the academic year 2021, semester 2. The students took the online (N = 14) and face-to-face (N = 17) formats and were required to fill out an instrument designed to evaluate critical thinking skills in March 2022. The tools used for the test had 50 items, and 4 choices, with a confidence value of 0.83. The result shows that the face-to-face student has higher critical thinking scores than the online students along the highest cognitive dimensions;on the other hand, face-to-face and online formats did not affect remembering, understanding, and applying levels. These formats are effective for analysis, evaluation, and creation, the student's face-to-face has more of an analysis and evaluation level than the student's online. ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 infodemic is an overwhelming amount of information that has challenged pandemic communication and epidemic response. WHO has produced weekly infodemic insights reports to identify questions, concerns, information voids expressed and experienced by people online. Publicly available data was collected and categorized to a public health taxonomy to enable thematic analysis. Analysis showed three key periods of narrative volume peaks. Understanding how conversations change over time can help inform future infodemic preparedness and prevention planning.

ABSTRACT

PurposeJarring events, be they global crises such as COVID-19 or technological events such as the Cambridge Analytica data incident, have bullwhip effects on billions of people's daily lives. Such "shocks” vary in their characteristics. While some shocks cause, for example, widespread adoption of information systems (IS) as diverse as Netflix and Teams, others lead users to stop using IS, such as Facebook. To offer insights into the multifaceted ways shocks influence user behavior, this study aims to assess the status quo of shock-related literature in the IS discipline and develop a taxonomy that paves the path for future IS research on shocks.Design/methodology/approachThis study conducted a literature review (N = 70) to assess the status quo of shock-related research in the IS discipline. Through a qualitative study based on users who experienced shocks (N = 39), it confirmed the findings of previous literature in an illustrative IS research context. Integrating the findings of the literature review and qualitative study, this study informs a taxonomy of shocks impacting IS use.FindingsThis study identifies different ways that shocks influence user behavior. The taxonomy reveals that IS research could profit from considering environmental, private and work shocks and shedding light on positive shocks. IS research could also benefit from examining the urgency of shocks, as there are indications that this influences how and when individuals react to a specific shock.Originality/valueFindings complement previous rational explanations for user behavior by showing technology use can be influenced by shocks. This study offers a foundation for forward-looking research that connects jarring events to patterns of technology use.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Epidemiology and genetic variations of the infectious bronchitis virus(IBV) in Fujian province were studied. Method: Two strains of virus isolated from the diseased chickens in Fujian in 2021 were identified by chicken embryo pathogenicity test, electron microscope observation, and RT-PCR. S1 genes of the isolates were cloned, sequenced, and analyzed using biological software. Result: The two IBV strains were code named FJ-NP01 and FJ-FZ01. The full length of S1 of FJ-NP01 was 1 629 nt encoding 543 amino acids, and that of FJ-FZ01, 1 620 nt encoding 540 amino acids. The S1 gene cleavage site of FJ-FZ01 was HRRRR, same as all reference strains of genotype I branch;while that of FJ-NP01 HRRKR differed from the reported site of IBV isolated from genotype IV but same as that of TC07-2 reference strain of genotype VI. The homology of nucleotide and amino acid between the two isolates was 83.2% and 79.6%, respectively, but merely 75.7%-76.3%and 77.1%-83.5% with the Mass-type conventional vaccines H120 and H52, respectively. Further analysis showed that FJ-NP01was from a recombination event between CK CH GD LZ12-4 and L-1148, the homology of nucleotide acid between 1438-1506 nt of FJ-NP01 with CK CH GD LZ12-4 was 97%, and 95.9% between the other nucleotide acid of S1 gene with L-1148. Conclusion: It appeared that the IBV epidemic experienced in the province was complex in nature and that the existing Mass vaccines would not provide sufficient immune protection to deter the spread.

ABSTRACT

Owing to the increased use of telehealth as a widely accepted means of providing patient care and the movement toward competency-based education, implementation of telehealth teaching, learning, and evaluation strategies into the graduate nursing plan of study is evolving quickly. This report uses Rutledge's "4Ps of Telehealth” framework to provide resources for faculty to incorporate telehealth knowledge, skills, attitudes, core telehealth competencies, and evaluation practices into the bachelor of science nursing to doctor of nursing practice program curriculum based on the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies. Formal preparation of students ensures future nurse practitioners are able to provide proficient, effective care through telehealth upon graduation.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to identify the areas of interest, research topics, and application areas that reflect the research nature of digital transformation (DT), as well as the strategies, practices, and trends of DT. To accomplish this, the Latent Dirichlet allocation algorithm, a probabilistic topic modeling technique, was applied to 5350 peer-reviewed journal articles on DT published in the last ten years, from 2013 to 2022. The analysis resulted in the discovery of 34 topics. These topics were classified, and a systematic taxonomy for DT was presented, including four sub-categories: implementation, technology, process, and human. As a result of time-based trend analysis, "Sustainable Energy”, "DT in Health”, "E-Government”, "DT in Education”, and "Supply Chain” emerged as top topics with an increasing trend. Our findings indicate that research interests are focused on specific applications of digital transformation in industrial and public settings. Based on our findings, we anticipate that the next phase of DT research and practice will concentrate on specific DT applications in government, health, education, and economics. "Sustainable Energy” and "Supply Chain” have been identified as the most prominent topics in current DT processes and applications. This study can help researchers and practitioners in the field by providing insights and implications about the evolution and applications of DT. Our findings are intended to serve as a guide for DT in understanding current research gaps and potential future research topics.

ABSTRACT

We present an analysis of students' thinking skills as evidenced by free-response exam problems during the Covid-19 pandemic. We compare two inquiry-based, laboratory-based classical mechanics courses, one taught online and one taught in person during the pandemic, and two inquiry-based, laboratory-based electricity and magnetism courses, one taught online and the other in person during the pandemic. We use a rubric that was previously developed based on Bloom's taxonomy (revised version) to compare the thinking skills of students in classes taught by different pedagogies. We discuss the method and analysis, and present results and interpretations. No significant differences were found in thinking skills between students in the online and in-person pandemic classical mechanics courses. However, we did see a difference in the thinking skills between the online and in-person pandemic electricity and magnetism courses as the semester progressed.

BACKGROUND: The extensive international research for medications and vaccines for the devastating COVID-19 pandemic requires a standard reference ontology. Among the current COVID-19 ontologies, the Coronavirus Infectious Disease Ontology (CIDO) is the largest one. Furthermore, it keeps growing very frequently. Researchers using CIDO as a reference ontology, need a quick update about the content added in a recent release to know how relevant the new concepts are to their research needs. Although CIDO is only a medium size ontology, it is still a large knowledge base posing a challenge for a user interested in obtaining the "big picture" of content changes between releases. Both a theoretical framework and a proper visualization are required to provide such a "big picture". METHODS: The child-of-based layout of the weighted aggregate partial-area taxonomy summarization network (WAT) provides a "big picture" convenient visualization of the content of an ontology. In this paper we address the "big picture" of content changes between two releases of an ontology. We introduce a new DIFF framework named Diff Weighted Aggregate Taxonomy (DWAT) to display the differences between the WATs of two releases of an ontology. We use a layered approach which consists first of a DWAT of major subjects in CIDO, and then drill down a major subject of interest in the top-level DWAT to obtain a DWAT of secondary subjects and even further refined layers. RESULTS: A visualization of the Diff Weighted Aggregate Taxonomy is demonstrated on the CIDO ontology. The evolution of CIDO between 2020 and 2022 is demonstrated in two perspectives. Drilling down for a DWAT of secondary subject networks is also demonstrated. We illustrate how the DWAT of CIDO provides insight into its evolution. CONCLUSIONS: The new Diff Weighted Aggregate Taxonomy enables a layered approach to view the "big picture" of the changes in the content between two releases of an ontology.

ABSTRACT

Critical thinking skills are undoubtedly the 21st-century skills that people use in their daily lives. In this context, this action research had as its main objective to evaluate the contribution of the use of short animated videos to improve higher-order thinking skills (analyze, create and evaluate) of first-year undergraduate students, both in oral production tasks as well as in written tasks in English, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, it explored students' perceptions in relation to their improvement in their own critical thinking skills. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, specifically, measures of central tendency. Additionally, the non-parametric Wilcoxon test was used in the measurements that were made in the writing ability to verify if the change observed in the participants' development of critical thinking skill was statistically significant. The results obtained revealed that after the intervention, an improvement was observed in the development of the undergraduates' critical thinking skills (analysis, evaluation, creation) in both language skills (writing and speaking). In a more exhaustive statistical analysis through the non-parametric Wilcoxon test applied to the writing tests' measurements, an increase among undergraduates' critical thinking skills was observed. The results of the tasks developed correlated positively with the students' perceptions, which was collected through a Likert scale. In conclusion, the study showed that the use of short, animated videos effectively helped first-year undergraduate students improve their higher-order critical thinking skills, during the COVID-19 crisis.

ABSTRACT

This study proposes an observation and analysis of podcasting, which, in Peru, is a new communication medium in the digital landscape, always evolving and changing. Through a cartographic study of the field, we settled on a sample of Peruvian podcasts in order to understand their sound content. We then carried out a comparative analysis from 2019 to 2020, which allowed us to note the effects of Covid-19 in podcast production. For our study, we conducted an analytic-descriptive investigation with a mixed approach: quantitative, through a content analysis of the sample;and qualitative, through an analysis of the podcasts. This approach is exploratory in scope and includes the observation of various platforms that host and distribute podcasts as well as the review of academic documents, market studies, and journalistic information. Our study demonstrates the diversity of Peruvian podcasting, its growth, and the involvement of many producers and communications media. Also, it advances a taxonomy of Peruvian podcasting, which allows us to see the diverse actors who produce these digital sound contents, their diverse production processes, the sound and narrative techniques they implement, and the evolution of how these contents are created.
